We had time to spare between getting off the Staten Island ferry and a free gig later that night so we walked to Ground Zero.
The site is currently being reconstructed and is currently a pit. I read in the New York Times that they are still searching for bodies.

At the first site there was the (reconstructed) fire station which was first to respond to the disaster:
The atmosphere was (not overly) solemn. I saw one lady crying. The fireman were posing for photos and one was even dancing (wtf?).
There was an inside tour with salvaged items etc which we didn't do.
